FOOD POLICIES
At YADA, the health and safety of our students is one of our highest priorities. To help protect children with food allergies, sensitivities, and dietary restrictions, we maintain a no food sharing policy in all classes, camps, and rehearsals.
Classroom Food
Parents may not bring food into the classroom to share with students. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Snacks
- Candy
- Baked goods
- Birthday treats
- Drinks
- Any other food intended to be shared
Students should only consume food that has been packed or provided specifically for them.
Birthday Celebrations
We love celebrating our students' birthdays!
If your child has a birthday during class or camp, you are welcome to send a small treat for your own child only. We will happily recognize their special day and sing "Happy Birthday" during class.
Food may not be distributed to other students.
If you would like to celebrate the class, you are welcome to provide non-food goodie bags for each student. Goodie bags may not contain food, candy, or drinks.
Interested in Treating the Cast to Pizza?
YADA maintains a strict no-food-sharing policy. However, there is one exception that we can sometimes accommodate with enough advance notice. If you would like to provide cheese pizza for the cast to enjoy between performances on show day, please email yadakids@yada.org at least five (5) business days before the show. We will then send a notification to all cast families letting them know that a parent will be providing cheese pizza for the cast's between-shows dinner. If a parent does not wish for their child to participate, that family will be responsible for providing an appropriate dinner for their own child. Please note that cheese pizza is the only food item permitted under this exception. No desserts, drinks, candy, or other food items may be provided. Thank you for your understanding and for helping us keep all of our students safe and included.
PAPERLESS ATTENDANCE
YADA is leaving Brightwheel and will be using a new system called CampInTouch Paperless Attendance. Please make sure to update the following before the first day of class:
- Click here to log into your account and click on "Forms & Documents" to update the "Authorized Grownups" section of your Campintouch/Campanion profile with the following:
- Upload a photo for any authorized grownups, including you.
- Fill in authorized grown-ups date of birth.
-
- Please bring your ID with you for drop off/pick up.
- Tell any authorized grownups that they will have to bring their ID to drop off/pick up. Should they forget, we will use their date of birth as our alternative identification check. There will no longer be "codes" like we have in Brightwheel.
- Please note that Emergency contacts are not considered authorized grownups and your children will not be released to these contacts. If you would like them to be, please also add them to the Authorized Grownups section.
DROP OFF/PICK UP PROCEDURES?
- Drop off window starts 15 minutes before class & pick up window ends 15 minutes after class. Please arrive within your assigned windows.
- If you are running late of if you will arrive past your cast's pick up window, please call our office at 323-655-9232.
- Pickups past the 15 minute window will incur a late fee of $1 per minute.
- You may pick your student up and drop them off at the back alley entrance via walk-up OR carline, or use our front lobby. If you choose to participate in carline, please stay in your car until you reach the front of the line when your child will then get in/out.
- To prevent a back up on 3rd St., please enter the carline from the North on Kilkea. (see diagram) We will not allow a south entrance into the alley.
- If you've reached the front of the carline and it is not your child's window for drop off or pick up, you will have to drive around. You cannot idle in the alley.
- If you need assistance checking your child in, please park and enter the front lobby so our staff can guide you!
- You can get ticketed by the city if you are blocking the sidewalk, driveways, or backed up on Kilkea or 3rd Street.
- At pickup, a YADA staff member will bring your child to your car when you reach the front of the car line.
YADA Studio City DROP OFF/PICK UP
- All drop off and pick up will be in the front parking lot of YADA Studio City.
As we continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students, we want to remind everyone about the importance of driving carefully and patiently in the carpool lane during drop-off and pick-up times. This is a high-traffic area, and with so many children walking to and from their vehicles, safety must be our top priority.
It only takes a few seconds of distraction or impatience for an accident to happen, and we want to avoid any risk to our students. To ensure a smooth and safe process for everyone, I kindly ask all families to follow these guidelines:
- Drive slowly through the carpool lane and remain aware of your surroundings at all times.
- Be patient—we have many families to get in and out, and everyone’s time is valuable.
- Be kind and courteous to other drivers, students, and staff members who are working to maintain safety.
We all share the responsibility of keeping our children safe. Let’s work together to ensure that drop-offs and pick-ups remain a positive experience for everyone. Thank you for your cooperation and for being such a wonderful and supportive community!
AUDITION MATERIALS
Auditions will take place on the first day of class. All students will participate in the show - our "auditions" give our directors the information they need to divide up parts and cast the show! They also give your student a chance to touch base one on one with their directors and gain confidence in the audition experience. Make sure you have downloaded the MP3 tracks and lyrics sheet to work on BEFORE the first day of camp. YADA TOTS, Improv, YADA IN A DAY and some Masterclasses do not need to prepare an audition. The audition lyrics and MP3s will be sent via newsletter before the start of camp/class.
*Please note- if your child is going to miss the first day of class, they will be asked to submit an audition video. Please reach out to our staff at yadakids@yada.org for more information.
WHAT TO DO IF I AM LATE?
- If you know in advance that you cannot avoid being late, please call the office at 323-655-9232.
- On the day that you are tardy, you must phone ahead to the office and alert them that you're arriving. They will notify your child’s teachers, who will come to check your child in as soon as feasible so as not to disrupt the other students in rehearsal.
WHAT TO DO IF I AM LATE FOR PICK-UP?
- Children who remain at YADA for more than 15 minutes after the end of class will be charged a late fee of $1.00 per minute.
- If you are unavoidably stuck in traffic, or have a last-minute emergency and cannot be here on time, please call YADA @ 323-655-9232 so we can let your child know you are on your way.
- The reason for this is most children become very anxious once all the other children have been picked up.
TIPS FOR HELPING YOUR CHILD
- Parents and guardians play an important role in the development of each student. Although YADA instructors give the students the necessary information for each class and rehearsal, we do require practice outside of YADA.
TIPS FOR HELPING:
- Sometimes students are shy about practicing in front of their family; please do not force them! Learning a new personal activity can be vulnerable and often times overwhelming. We recommend you let your child develop at their own pace. YADA wants learning to be as fun as possible.
- If your child does want your help, go over their lines with them. Help them to not only memorize their lines, but their cue lines as well. (A cue line is the line directly before they speak.)
- Also, help them to learn the plot of each scene. You can start by asking them what is happening in the scene. This will help your child memorize their lines with an idea of what the scene is actually about.
- Students will get access to their vocal and non-vocals tracks via QR codes on their script covers AND in the second newsletter once rehearsals are underway. Scripts will be handed out at the 2nd rehearsal. Having them listen and practice to the tracks is a great way to help with retention and is also a lot of fun!
COSTUMES! WIGS! MAKEUP! AND MICS!
- YADA will be providing costumes, make-up, hats and sometimes wigs.
- The actors will be wearing mics on their show day.
- Show Clothes must be worn under costumes on both dress rehearsal AND show days. Show Clothes consist of a skin toned tank top and bike shorts. ALL actors will arrive to YADA with show clothes under their costumes regardless if they change costumes or not. This is so a YADA Team member can easily put on the actor's body microphone and also for costume changes. See graphics below for various types of show clothes.
- Our production-based classes/camps require the use of show clothes. Please note, these are not required for all shows at YADA. If you are unsure if your child will need show clothes, please contact the YADA Office before selecting this option. You can always add this option at a later date. These "Show Clothes," or undergarments, are neutral colored bike shorts and fitted tank tops; providing the necessary support, coverage, and discretion for all performers. You may provide your own Show Clothes, or pre-order them here for ease and confidence! PLEASE NOTE - YOU WILL ONLY SEE THE SHOW CLOTHES LISTED THAT ARE NECESSARY TO THE SHOW/CLASS/CAMP YOU HAVE ENROLLED FOR.
- If your child does not show up in show clothes on their dress rehearsal or show day, you will be charged for the show clothes that are provided by YADA.
CASTING:
ROTATIONAL CASTING
At YADA, we use what we call Rotational Casting. Students often remain in the same class level for the full school year (Fall–Spring) so their teachers can get to know them, help set personal goals based on each child’s current development, and their casting history throughout the year. Over time, we track the types of roles each child has been given so they can experience a variety of performance challenges and learning opportunities.
Students may rotate through different casting tracks to build a well-rounded set of performance skills, though repeating the same track toward a specific growth goal can also be valuable. Because our goal is to meet students where they are, a complete rotation within a single school year does not always occur. Instead, rotational casting serves as a guide that helps teachers understand each student’s journey and use casting opportunities to support their continued growth.
While some children may be “Broadway Bound,” that is not our primary goal at YADA. Our values center on each child’s comfort and confidence, helping them develop lifelong skills they can use in any path they choose. We provide a safe, supportive environment where students can challenge themselves, explore new performance experiences, and grow over time. We view every role as an opportunity for development and continually observe how students evolve so we can thoughtfully challenge them in future productions.
Types of Tracks:
Multiple Track
In a multiple track, students often play multiple roles throughout the show with possible costume changes. These tracks teach important theatrical skills such as adaptability, quick backstage transitions, spatial awareness, and strong ensemble performance. Students learn how to support the story as a group, stay fully engaged onstage even when they are not the focus, and maintain high energy and commitment throughout the entire production. Ensemble work is one of the most foundational experiences in theatre and helps build strong performers who understand collaboration and storytelling as a team.
Character Track
In a character track, a student is given a role with a clearly defined personality and comedic or dramatic traits. These roles often involve making strong acting choices, exploring physicality, vocal variation, and developing a distinct stage presence. Character roles teach students how to fully embody a role, make bold creative decisions, and bring a unique personality to the stage. These parts are often memorable because they allow young actors to explore humor, exaggeration, and storytelling through character work.
Central Track
In a central track, students play roles that help guide the narrative of the show. These roles typically carry more dialogue, solos, and responsibility for moving the story forward. Students in these roles learn leadership skills, consistency, memorization, and the responsibility of helping anchor scenes for the rest of the cast. It requires strong focus, preparation, and the ability to support fellow performers while maintaining the pacing and clarity of the story.
Note: Rotational Casting does not apply to our Junior Master, Master and Company level programs.
ACCESSIBILITY:
Most classes, rehearsals, and performances at YADA 3rd St take place on the second floor of our historic building and are reached by one staircase of 18 steps with a handrail. There is no elevator or chairlift, so the theatre is not wheelchair accessible. We want every family to be able to plan with confidence. If you or a guest has mobility needs, please call us at 323-655-9232 or email yadakids@yada.org before the show, and our team will be happy to talk through your options.
TICKETS:
Tickets are $20 each. Your ticket purchase plays a crucial role in helping us cover production costs and assembling a full-sized crew for our shows. This support allows us to provide a professional-level experience for our young performers and ensures that every aspect of the production is meticulously crafted, offering our kids the opportunity to immerse themselves fully in the theatrical experience. As we get closer to the shows, you will be receiving information on how to purchase tickets. Thank you for helping us create magical moments on stage!
Outdoor Space
- YADA 3rd Street and YADA Studio City both have beautiful outdoors spaces for kids and staff to take breaks.
VISITOR POLICY
-
- YADA has a closed classroom policy. All drop-off and pick-up will take place outside YADA, with the exception of our TOTS and Pre-Primary classes at 3rd St.
- Tots parents and caregivers are encouraged to remain in the lobby for bathroom assistance.
Health & Illness Policy
YADA follows current public health guidance and asks families to help us maintain a healthy learning environment for all students and staff. If your child is experiencing a fever, vomiting, or other symptoms of a contagious illness, please keep them home until symptoms have improved and they are able to participate comfortably in class. Students and staff who test positive for COVID-19 should follow current public health recommendations regarding isolation, masking, and returning to activities. If you have questions about our health and safety policies, please contact us at yadakids@yada.org or 323-655-9232.
Vaccines?
- All YADA staff members are fully vaccinated for in person classes and camps.
- We strongly urge all eligible students to get vaccinated for COVID-19, but it is not a requirement. YADA requires the same vaccinations as LAUSD as a precondition for attendance.
- If your child does have the Covid-19 vaccine, simply upload a copy of it to your Campintouch Account. Please cover all medical information.
WHEN TO QUARANTINE?
-
- Employees and program participants who contract Covid-19 and have symptoms of illness must self-isolate away from YADA facilities for at least the first 24 hours after a positive test.
- After the first 24 hours, if the employee/program participant has been fever-free without the use of medication for at least 24 hours AND if symptoms are improving overall for at least 24 hours, they may return to YADA for work or program participation while wearing a well-fitting face mask for at least 5 days after symptoms onset or after testing positive for Covid-19, whichever comes first.
- Employees and program participants who test positive for Covid-19 but do not have any symptoms of illness may continue with work shifts and programs as scheduled with no interruption/isolation but should wear a well-fitting face mask for at least 5 days after a positive test.
- Anyone testing positive for Covid-19 may be mask-free in a YADA class or performance facility within those 5 days if they have 2 negative tests sequentially taken 48 hours apart.
WHAT CLEANING MEASURES WILL BE TAKEN?
- A professional cleaning company will deep clean the used spaces twice a week.
